Why one NASA scientist speaks out about climate change

Top NASA climate scientist, James Hansen, tells the story of his involvement in the science of and debate over global climate change.  He outlines the overwhelming evidence that change is happening and why that makes him deeply worried about the future.

In kicking off the melting of the planet’s ice sheets, we may well have started a feedback process that is beyond human control, one that could lead to many more New Orleans type flooding disasters.  In the distant past, due to periodic changes in the Earth’s orbit, the sun has warmed the planet and this has led to an increase of greenhouse gases, which has led to more warming.  Now humans have increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which has led to warming – and this warming will, as in the past, lead to a further increase of greenhouse gases which will further warm the planet.
