Write to the PM about the Paris meeting

The Federal government will be deciding what Greenhouse gas emissions target to take to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change meeting in Paris late this year.  The government said that they will announce Australia’s target mid year, so they could be making this decision now.

Please consider writing a letter to the Federal government along the following lines.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott,
Parliament House, Canberra ACT 2600

Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt

The Federal government will be deciding what Greenhouse gas emissions target to take to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change meeting in Paris late this year.  I call on you to:

•    Increase Australia’s contribution to international climate action with the goal of keeping the global temperature rise to within 1.5°C.  Many scientists consider that a greater temperature rise will endanger life on this planet as we know it and cause suffering to millions of people and other species.
•     Set a target for the reduction of Australia’s domestic greenhouse gas emissions to 30% below 2000 levels by 2025, as recommended by the Climate Change Authority.

Australian greenhouse gas emissions are high as we use coal, we travel long distances and live in big houses. This means that we are using more than our fair share of the world’s resources.  Australia is:

•    Per person, the highest emitter of greenhouse gas of the developed countries
•    By tonnage, the 13th biggest greenhouse gas emitting country
•    The world’s second biggest coal exporter
•    The world’s 4th biggest coal producer

Australia is making a significant contribution to global emissions – and Australia is vulnerable to the weather extremes that climate change is bringing, the extreme droughts, fires and floods.

Taking strong steps to reduce climate change would benefit the global environment and benefit our economy. Tackling climate change is one of the greatest economic opportunities of the 21st century and we should seize the opportunities of a low-carbon, clean energy economy. It could be our engine for growth and jobs for decades to come.  We can grasp those opportunities for Australia and for the world or let them slip.

You have a chance to be respected for acting wisely at this crucial time in history.

  1. The government has said that they will announce Australia’s target mid year, which could mean by the end of June or perhaps earlier.
