California sets pace with 40% emissions reduction target

California is aiming for its emissions to be at 1990 levels by 2020 and to be 40% below 1990 levels by 2040 below 1990 levels.  The state of California has a population of 38 million and an economy about 30% larger than Australia’s.  
… By 2030 California will increase from one-third to 50% of electricity derived from renewable sources; reduce petroleum use in cars and trucks by up to 50% and double the efficiency savings from existing buildings
